Changes in Operations of Port Orford Field Station Coming in September 2025
Oregon State University (OSU) oversees the Port Orford Field Station under the umbrella of the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC). This oversight structure is one of many recent changes associated with the University’s decision to centralize all marine research operations. Unrelated, but concurrent, changes in the federal funding landscape and significant uncertainties associated with the future are driving new strategic efforts to review and diversify funding portfolios to maintain support for our impactful research and education. These reviews touch all OSU’s Marine Research Enterprise, including the Port Orford Field Station.
New Operational Structure
OSU is implementing a seasonal reduction in personnel for the winter of 2025/26. At the same time there will be an increase in support through personnel and services provided through HMSC. This change will be effective for the winter of 2025/26. An on-site coordinator will focus on continuing to keep the Port Orford Field Station open and accessible to users. OSU staff will work diligently to meet user needs within this new operational framework.
All facility reservations should continue to be made through the Port Orford Field Station website at using the Request Use of Facilities form found on the home page. Please plan ahead by submitting requests two business days or more in advance of intended visit dates to ensure smooth operations and adequate support.

The Future
OSU remains dedicated to supporting field research activities and maintaining the station as a valuable resource for the scientific community, local partners, and the greater south coast. This station serves as a model for linking innovative and cutting-edge research with the education of students and transformative community engagement. Much of this is accomplished through partnerships, with Port Orford Field Station placed as a facilitator and enabler for our partners so that their accomplishments can be magnified.
We plan to conduct listening sessions in the fall of 2025, and winter and spring of 2026 to inform future planning. Date, time, and location of these will be posted on this website and disseminated widely. We value your input.
